Initiative 3: Guidelines for Green IT for public authorities

Public authorities must take the lead in the use of Green IT solutions. Therefore, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation is preparing a set of guidelines on Green IT for public authorities. The guidelines should help public authorities to include Green IT considerations in all phases of the lives of IT products, from cradle to grave

The guidelines will include recommendations on how to set up server rooms in an energy-saving manner. Servers are among the most energy-consuming types of equipment used in modern organisations. Considerable environmental gains can be achieved by designing server rooms appropriately. The Danish Electricity Saving Trust estimates that electricity consumption can often be reduced by one-third to one-half without compromising security.

The guidelines will also focus on the use of laptop computers and thin clients in the public sector. Both laptop computers and thin clients can provide considerable environmental savings, as they generally use far less power than desktop computers do. Moreover, the guidelines will contain advice on video conferencing, virtual meetings, e-learning, telework, software and the disposal of electronic garbage – the so-called e-waste. Finally, the guidelines will deal with some of the organisational aspects of the adoption of green it-solutions by public authorities.
